Social Vulnerability
To quantify and map the human dimensions of climate hazard vulnerability, a social vulnerability index has emerged as a valuable tool. To do this the 3 dimensions that impact vulnerability are combined into a single index score. To ensure ease of use the social vulnerability index score should be easily understood by non-technical audiences and so the final social vulnerability score is cantered around 0, with a score above 0 indicating elevated social vulnerability and below 0 indicating lower levels of vulnerability (McCullagh et al, 2025; Fitton et al., 2021).
